Learning and growing in quarantine

The quarantine gave Lighthouse the perfect opportunity to start up a program of remote classes, which are still going strong! In the words of some of our teachers, here is a window into what's keeping them busy!

True Guiding Light

~ by Nicole Twyne

A few weeks ago, I introduced the song My Lighthouse by Rend Collective to the participants who are in my Worship Music sessions. I thought it might make some of them happy to hear a song about lighthouses, in particular, since I know many of them are really missing everyone at Lighthouse Vocational Services! Well, I didn’t anticipate how much they would “light up” when they heard it! I think especially of Angie Weber and Jimmy McMillin, who became so excited when they heard the chorus for the first time:

My Lighthouse, my Lighthouse

Shining in the darkness I will follow You

My Lighthouse, my Lighthouse

I will trust the promise You will carry me

Safe to shore, safe to shore

Safe to shore, safe to shore

Also, this song is a great reminder that the only true light guiding us through this uncertain time is the Light of the World, Jesus Christ. In the words of the third verse…

I won’t fear what tomorrow brings

With each morning I’ll rise and sing

My God’s love will lead me through

You are the peace in my troubled sea

You are the peace in my troubled sea

Seeing the joy of participants like Angie and Jimmy reminds me that the most important time to worship is NOW!

Body & Soul

~ by Gabby Romano

I am way excited to connect with our participants doing two remote Bible Studies and two remote Exercise Classes each week.

In the Bible Study we are studying the Fruit of the Spirit in Gal 5:22. The participants are responding really well in discussions, answering Bible questions verbally or with hand and head movements/gestures from our non-verbal participants. We are having fun and they are learning, it has been very interactive.

The Exercise Classes involve stretching and other low impact movements like holding short sticks and/or a rope, sitting and standing. Each individual has been very responsive!

I have to admit that I am emotional at times after seeing their faces, their smiles and enthusiasm to stay connected. We all look forward to seeing each other during the time we have each week. It's really fun when other staff visit our sessions as well, it means so much to everyone. God is so good!

Social Skills

~by Ashley Hankins and Kaitlyn Deemer

It has been great for us to witness the growth of the individuals in our Social Skills Training class. The participants have been able to answer more and more questions regarding the subject matter, and are also asking questions of their own. It's wonderful to see that the information we're teaching is making a difference.

Also, one of the individuals, Chanse, always asks Kaitlyn to pray either at the beginning or end of the class. This makes our hearts sing.

Making the world more art project at a time

There's nothing more fun to see than the colorful results of a lot of great art sessions! Thanks to Connie Rutter and Dustin Horne for leading these classes and sharing these pictures!
