Safe Community Outings, Volunteering, and Working for Local Businesses

Throughout the history of Lighthouse's Community Participation Services (CPS) program, it has focused primarily on providing our participants with volunteer opportunities at local non-profits. This allowed individuals in the program to gain skills, develop new relationships with people in the community, and experience the joy of giving back.

The Coronavirus pandemic has, for the moment, decreased the availability of volunteer opportunities. Instead, Lighthouse has been utilizing a newly designed Community Outing Resource that outlines ideas of indoor and outdoor activities for CPS participants to enjoy all around Lancaster County. The resource includes places like walking trails, parks, farmer’s markets, petting zoos, fruit orchards, and museums.

So far, our CPS groups have enjoyed activities in New Holland, Ephrata, Strasburg, Bird-in-Hand, and Lancaster. Recently CPS staff have taken participants to explore Park City Mall, Kitchen Kettle Village, the Ephrata Rail Trail, Barnes & Noble, and Long’s Park. CPS staff are using this time to learn about individuals' interests and places they enjoy.

The activities chosen for CPS are based on safety, and the groups only go to places at which they can practice social distancing and wear masks at all times.

CPS continues to serve local non-profits, as well, and is eager to include additional sites. If you are or know a non-profit looking for volunteers, please reach out to Eileen Campbell at

Our Small Group Employment (SGE) program connects local businesses with Lighthouse work crews that are supported by Certified Employment Specialists. This is a great option for businesses that need additional employees on either a short-term or long-term basis. We are continuing to seek out businesses that would benefit from this service and are interested in establishing a relationship with Lighthouse. If your business is interested in learning more about Lighthouse and Small Group Employment work crews, please contact Eileen Campbell at
